What Is Child Orthodontics?

Child orthodontics focuses on guiding proper jaw growth and tooth alignment during the developmental years—often beginning as early as age 7. Early orthodontic care can prevent more serious issues later and set the stage for a confident, healthy smile.

At our Waldo practice, we offer a full range of orthodontic options for kids and teens, including:

  • Early interceptive orthodontics to guide jaw growth and bite development
  • Space maintainers to preserve room for adult teeth after early tooth loss
  • Braces (both traditional metal and more discreet options)
  • Clear aligners using uLab technology—comfortable, removable, and custom-made

We keep things simple, stress-free, and tailored to your child’s stage of growth and smile goals.

FAQs

Find answers to common questions from our patients

When should my child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial orthodontic evaluation around age 7. That doesn’t mean your child will need braces right away—it just helps us catch potential issues early.

What’s the difference between early treatment and braces?

Early interceptive treatment (like space maintainers or bite correction) typically happens before all adult teeth come in. Braces and aligners are usually used later to fine-tune alignment once most or all adult teeth are present.

Are clear aligners an option for kids?

Yes! With uLab clear aligners, many older kids and teens can straighten their teeth comfortably and discreetly—without the brackets. We’ll let you know if your child is a good fit.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

Some discomfort is normal at the beginning of treatment or after adjustments, but it’s usually mild and short-lived. Our team is great at helping kids stay comfortable throughout the process.
